Troubleshooting Common Issues
Buzzing Strings
Possible Causes:
- Low action height
- Worn or uneven frets
- Loose hardware (bridge pins, tailpiece)
- String height at nut too low
Solutions: Check action height first. If action is too low, the instrument may need a setup adjustment. Inspect frets for wear. Ensure all hardware is properly seated. If problems persist, consult a professional luthier.
Tuning Instability
Possible Causes:
- New strings not properly stretched
- Faulty tuning pegs
- Temperature or humidity changes
- Improper string winding
Solutions: New strings require stretching—tune up repeatedly until stable. Check tuning peg operation and lubricate if sticky. Ensure strings are properly wound around pegs. Monitor environmental conditions.
Sticky Finish
Possible Causes:
- Accumulated oils and dirt
- Humidity causing finish to soften
- Incompatible cleaning products
Solutions: Clean with appropriate instrument polish and microfiber cloth. Avoid household cleaners. If humidity is high, use dehumidification. For persistent stickiness, consult a professional about finish restoration.
High Action
Possible Causes:
- High humidity causing wood expansion
- Neck relief requiring adjustment
- Saddle height too high
Solutions: Check humidity levels first—high humidity often raises action. If humidity is normal, action may need adjustment via truss rod (if applicable) or saddle modification. These adjustments should be done by a professional.
Bridge Lifting
Possible Causes:
- High humidity causing glue failure
- Age-related glue deterioration
- Excessive string tension
Solutions: This requires immediate professional attention. Loosen strings to reduce tension. Do not attempt to reglue yourself—improper gluing can cause permanent damage. A luthier will properly clean and reglue the bridge.
